On February 28, 2014, our director , Mrs. Nadine Beeckmans, visited a fluoride removal plant at Mdori, close to Minjingu. The research team of Profs Andrea Schaefer & Bryce Richards have tested their solar powered membrane filtration system in Mdori last week. Their challenge was to remove fluoride and make drinking water from a water that contains 65 mg/L fluoride. The mission was successful measured by the long queues waiting to share the 1500L of drinking water produced every day and the Mdori primary school kids visiting and many leaving determined to become professors. Junjie Shen – a PhD candidate on the project – measured fluoride below the WHO drinking water guideline of 1.5 mg/L. The team is now looking for sponsors to implement the next phase and make the technology work long term in rural areas like Mdori.
