On July,2, 2014  our director, Ben Beeckmans, was invited to give a lecture at the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and technology. The invitation was extended by Prof. Dr. Thadeus Tarimo.

The topic was : The Northern Tanzanian Divergence. Tectonics, volcanism and its risks.

Present were masters and PhD students from several disciplines, like biodiversity, even computer science.

After a general introduction in geomorphology and geophysics was given, the geology of the Northern Tanzanian Divergence was explained, with its relevant tectonics and resulting volcanism. Special attention was given to volcanic hazards. Highlighted were possible volcanic risks related to Mts. Meru and Kilimanjaro
